What is Fable?
Fable is an open-world action-RPG from Playground Games that trades the usual fantasy seriousness for a genuine fairy-tale tone. You grow up in Albion, awaken heroic powers as a child, and then continue the journey as an adult hero whose every decision ripples outward. It’s a fresh start for the series: this Fable doesn’t continue the older games’ storylines, though Albion and parts of the original lore remain.
Getting started
Your first stretch is spent as a child in Albion, where the story quietly introduces you to your abilities. Treat this section as a tutorial rather than a race — watch how the game reacts to what you do, because that feedback loop is the whole design in miniature.
A time jump then moves you forward to adulthood in Briar Hill, your home village. Not long after, a stranger turns your grandmother and the entire village to stone. That event is the hook: you leave Briar Hill to find out what happened. Don’t rush the departure — talk to people, look around, and get comfortable before you go.
Once the map opens up you can travel freely, from the southern villages up into the northern regions. The capital, Bowerstone, is your main hub — it holds Fairfax Castle and the Heroes’ Guild, and the Guild appears as a point of interest early in the story. Getting a feel for Bowerstone early pays off, because a lot of Albion’s business runs through it.
Tips for beginners
- Think before you choose. Choices affect your relationships with NPCs, story outcomes, and how the world responds to you. There’s rarely a free reset.
- Treat reputation as a resource. The game tells you reputation is everything — so build it deliberately rather than by accident.
- Don’t skip the childhood prologue. It’s where you learn your powers and the game’s tone.
- Explore in both directions. Southern villages and northern regions are all open to you; the main story isn’t the only content.
- Learn Bowerstone early. The capital is the best place to understand how Albion works.
- Talk to NPCs more than once. Relationships change, and so does what people tell you.
- Accept that fairy-tale endings aren’t guaranteed. Some outcomes simply won’t be the “good” one, and that’s intentional.
Is it worth playing?
If you want a large, choice-driven RPG that feels like a storybook rather than a grimdark epic, Fable is an easy recommendation. It’s available on Xbox Series X|S, PC and PlayStation 5, and it’s built for players who want their decisions to carry weight. If you’re expecting a direct continuation of the old Fable games, adjust your expectations — this is a new chapter in Albion, not a sequel. For everyone else, it’s a strong place to begin.
