Red Dead Redemption 2 Guide & Walkthrough

What is Red Dead Redemption 2?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a slow-burning, open-world western from Rockstar Games that puts you in the worn boots of Arthur Morgan, a loyal enforcer in the Van der Linde gang. Set in 1899, it trades the genre’s usual lone-hero fantasy for something rarer: a story about a group of outlaws watching their way of life disappear. It blends shooter, RPG and adventure systems into one of the most detailed worlds ever built.

Getting started

The first few hours are deliberately slow. Treat them as a tutorial for the whole game rather than a hurdle — the mission design teaches you horse riding, cover shooting and the honour system at a comfortable pace. Don’t rush.

Your core loop is: ride out, complete missions or hunt, then return to camp. Camp is not just a menu — it’s where you donate money and meat to keep the gang supplied, upgrade your wagon, and talk to members to unlock side content. Neglect it and you’ll miss a lot.

Three systems matter most early on:

  • Honour — your reputation. Honourable actions give shop discounts and better prices; dishonourable ones give you a different story and more loot. Neither is “wrong,” but pick a direction and stay consistent.
  • Dead Eye — bullet time. It refills as you play, so use it in tight fights instead of hoarding it.
  • Horse bonding — your horse levels up with you. Feed, brush and calm it, and it stops panicking mid-gunfight.

Save the open-world exploration for after Chapter 2, when the map and shops fully open up.

Tips for beginners

  1. Upgrade your satchel first. The Legend of the East satchel lets you carry far more, which removes the constant inventory juggling. It takes hunting, but it pays off for the rest of the game.
  2. Do the camp upgrades. Donating to the ledger unlocks fast travel, better food and gang improvements that make everything cheaper.
  3. Loot every body, but watch your Honour. Corpses carry cash, ammo and tonics. Robbing innocent strangers costs Honour; looting dead enemies does not.
  4. Clean your guns. Dirty weapons lose damage and accuracy. Cleaning takes seconds and is free.
  5. Use the map’s bounty and stranger icons. Stranger missions give the best character writing and unique rewards.
  6. Hunt with the right weapon. A clean headshot with the correct rifle preserves a perfect pelt; blasting a deer with a shotgun ruins it.
  7. Take the fast travel and trains. The world is huge — don’t walk everywhere out of pride.

Is it worth playing?

Yes, if you want a story-driven adventure and can accept a deliberately unhurried pace. It’s rated around 93 for good reason: the writing, world and characters are exceptional. If you prefer fast, arcade action, the slow opening may frustrate you. For everyone else, this is a landmark game that rewards patience with one of gaming’s great stories.
